The twenty-two sisters who comprise this new foundation had already lived Dominican life for many years, but they were convinced that God was calling them to begin something new in the Church. The sisters sought and received approval for the new foundation from the Congregation for Religious in Rome. Bishop William E. Lori of the Bridgeport Diocese welcomed the sisters into his diocese.
The grace of God urged them to establish this Dominican congregation, dedicated to Our Lady, with the primary mission of education. Our firm purpose is to live fully our Dominican heritage of communal life, prayer, and study essential to teaching and preaching in the framework of authentic theological Catholic formation.
For Our Lady of the Springs, the historic purpose of the Order remains clear: to be constant in our love of Jesus Christ; to believe and trust in the Catholic faith and to communicate our faith and values in the face of the constant flux of the current culture.
Like Dominic in the 13th century, we challenge modern heresies with knowledge and fortitude, being anchored in the beliefs of the Catholic Church and in foundation of our own Dominican life.
The “can-do” spirit of the pioneer sisters remains in the DNA of the sisters who are beginning Our Lady of the Springs Congregation now. With the grace of God, our cooperation with one another, our prayers for guidance by the Spirit, our dedication to the Truth and to the spread of the Word, we have confidence that our contribution to the Church will be blessed. We pray for other young women to answer God’s call to our Congregation.
Our principal apostolic service is Catholic education from young to old. This focus on education provides access to multitudes of people. Our own faith foundation, our spiritual and prayer life, and our ethical convictions are supported by our formal education in a wide variety of fields.
This new Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Springs aims to revitalize its Dominican life so that its contemplation can effectively bring the Word of God, the Life of Christ, into the mainstream of Catholic life.
