Sr. Elizabeth McDonough, O.P ., a Dominican Sister of Our Lady of the Springs has authored a chapter in a new book entitled Apostolic Religious Life in America Today: A Response to the Crisis, published by the Catholic University of America Press. Edited by Richard Gribble, CSC, the book presents the entire Symposium on Apostolic Religious Life held at Stonehill College (North Easton, MA) in 2008.
Sr. Elizabeth addressed the (1) historical context of the Council, (2) challenges of Perfectae Caritatis and its implementation, (3) practical and theological significance of altered order of the vows of poverty-chastity-obedience in Perfectae Caritas, (4) inadequacy of curial oversight regarding sweeping changes made by women religious after Vatican II, and (5) ongoing deconstruction of congregations of women religious as resulting in "a personal and ecclesial tragedy of immense proportions".
The symposium was part of the 200th anniversary of the Archdiocese of Boston. Cardinal Sean O'Malley, OFM, wrote the foreward of the publication.
